Wood Carving Workshops with Nasser Mansouri

Over the last few weeks we have begun hosting a series of workshops to learn about the art of the crafts we sell. We were very lucky to have Nasser come and teach the basics of Nuristani woodcarving.

We began with, what is supposedly simple, Nuristani design that you can see in our walnut wood chopping boards.

According to Nasser, the trick is to think of carving an upside down pyramid...

In the second week students bought their own chisels but some of these weren't too sharp. We managed to salvage this with some sand paper to sharpen the chisels. So no more excuses because only a poor workman blames his tools...

Some people picked the skill up very naturally...

... But it really tested a lot of our patience!

Trying out the more advanced step of Nuristani carving...

Nasser is one of the most accomplished classical carvers in the world, completing numerous prestigious commissions and his private clients include Presidents and Princes, as well as 5 Star Hotels and New York architecture firms. These are some of his new designs that are influenced by ancient Nuristani dolls but the shape is inspired by Giacometti's iconic figurines. Stay tuned for more workshops...
